Wedding Season: What to Wear and Not to Wear

Wedding season is amongst us and what a joyous time to celebrate one of life's greatest accomplishments with your loved ones and friends. You can always expect good food, music and wonderful decor, but what will you wear? Usually the Bride will give her preference as to what she wants her guests to wear. Depending on the time of year and location, here's some tips to help you decide what will make you the star of the night without stealing all the shine from the Bride!

Formal  Weddings

These are usually the traditional black tie type of weddings. Women are expected to wear pant suits or dresses that are at least at knees length in pastel, jewel or earth tones for all weddings before 6pm. Any times after 6pm long gowns are strongly encouraged for a formal glam look. For gentlemen a suit and tie in business casual colors such as black navy and tan are acceptable for weddings before 6pm. After 6pm a tuxedo is strongly suggested.

Informal Weddings

Informal weddings suggests that the attire is flexible. Women can wear cocktail dresses, patterns, a variety of colors as long as it is tasteful, does not look like your going to the club, and does not cause too much attention away from the bride. Gentlemen can wear casual button ups and slacks. After 6pm a shirt and tie would be acceptable.

Seasonal and Destination Weddings

These weddings are more weather cautious than color. Whether it is indoor or outdoor, at a beach or in a barn; you should be prepared to dress fashionably reasonable for any location. If you're going to a winter wonder-land themed wedding that is outside it may be acceptable to wear white but just make sure to also wear a fashionable/formal fur shawl or coat, and for gentlemen, a nice, long wool coat. Maybe the wedding is tropical... for ladies, a nice strapless or spaghetti strapped dress would do. Floral or vibrant colors would be nice, and you could even go short or flowy long length. For gentlemen it would be exceptional to wear khaki shorts and a button up shirt.

What Colors Not to Wear

Avoid white at all cost, unless you are informed otherwise. Black is a case by case situation; you do not want to give the notion that you are attending a funeral. Try not to wear the colors of the wedding or that coordinate with the wedding; you do not want to blend in with the wall or be mistaken for being part of the wedding party when you are not. When in doubt just be conservative with neutral soft, warm or cool colors. Either way, the Bride and Groom would be happy to have you share their special day with them.
